چکیده

We show that the crust-core interface in neutron stars acts as a potential barrier to the peripheral neutron vortices approaching the interface in the model in which these are coupled to the proton vortex clusters. This elementary barrier because of the interaction of vortex magnetic flux with the Meissner currents set up by the crustal magnetic field at the interface. The dominant part of the force is derived from to the cluster-interface interaction. As a result of the stopping of the continuous neutron vortex current through the interface, angular momentum is stored in the superfluid layers in the vicinity of the crust-core interface during the interglitch period. Discontinuous annihilation of proton vortices on the boundary restores the neutron vortex current and spins up the observable crust on short time-scales, leading to a glitch in the spin characteristics of a pulsar.

The effect of superfluid hydrodynamics on pulsar glitch sizes and waiting times

Pulsar glitches, sudden jumps in frequency observed in many radio pulsars, may be the macroscopic manifestation of superfluid vortex avalanches on the microscopic scale. Small scale quantum mechanical simulations of vortex motion in a decelerating container have shown that such events are possible and predict power-law distributions for the size of the events, and exponential distributions for ...

Vortex Unpinning in Precessing Neutron Stars

The neutron vortices thought to exist in the inner crust of a neutron star interact with nuclei and are expected to pin to the nuclear lattice. Evidence for long-period precession in pulsars, however, requires that pinning be negligible. We estimate the strength of vortex pinning and show that hydrodynamic forces present in a precessing star are likely sufficient to unpin all of the vortices of...

Pulsar Glitch Behaviour and AXPs, SGRs and DTNs

Large pulsar glitches seem to be common to all radio pulsars and to exhibit a universal behaviour connecting the rate of occurrence, event size and interglitch relaxation that can be explained if the glitches are due to angular momentum exchange in the neutron star. This has implications for the energy dissipation rate. The large timing excursions observed in SGRs are not similar to the pulsar ...

Generation of Pulsar Glitches: a Superfluid Core Model A

We show that the neutron star's crust-core interface acts as a potential barrier on the peripheral neutron vortices approaching this interface and thus prevents their continuous decay on it in the course of equilibrium state deceleration. The barrier arises due to the interaction of vortex magnetic flux with the Meissner currents set up by the crustal magnetic field at the interface. When the n...

Neutron star glitches have a substantial minimum size

Glitches are sudden spin-up events that punctuate the steady spin-down of pulsars and are thought to be due to the presence of a superfluid component within neutron stars. The precise glitch mechanism and its trigger, however, remain unknown. The size of glitches is a key diagnostic for models of the underlying physics. While the largest glitches have long been taken into account by theoretical...
